vSphere 4 Compatibility Issues

VMware LogoThe 21st of April 2009 will see VMware announce the release date for vSphere 4.0 (formerly VMware Infrastructure 4) or at the very least announce its release to manufacturing (RTM) date. Whilst many in the VMware community are eager to become early adopters of the new version there are, as with any new software release, those who wish to extensively verify its reliability and compatibility before adopting it in a production environment.

Rumors currently circulating in the VMware community are suggesting that on its initial release vSphere 4.0 will have very limited support for some of the other VMware management and automation products currently supported under VMware Infrastructure 3.5.

According to the virtualisation blog and news sites VMGuru.nl  and  DABCC the following list of VMware products will not be supported on vSphere 4.0 when it first ships:

  • VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager
  • VMware vCenter Lifecycle Manager
  • VMware vCenter Lab Manager
  • VMware vCenter Stage Manager
  • VMware View 3

If these incompatabilites are confirmed this will be a major headache for early adopters. vSphere will however be available with vCentre for basic managment and automation. That said the longer VMware takes to release updated versions of the above products the bigger the problem will become and the slower the potential uptake we will see of the new version in exisitng VMware houses.
